![]() This may go on for three or four months, but it always breaks down, at least in my experience. You may meet a girl and take her on the road with you for a week and then two weeks later she’ll come out for a gig. Sometimes you need a relationship to keep you sane, but it’s impossible to keep anythin’ together while you’re touring. He also concedes that “being on the road isn’t sexually, but emotionally frustrating. I miss the rain a lot as well, actually.” I miss small things like going into a shop and knowing all the people. “What I miss most is all my toys at home – all my little synths and my stereo, and the fact that I can’t walk around all day in just my underpants if I want to, eat when I want to and put the phone in the bath if I want to. The people are sort of like those in New York – rough, but friendly if you can get them to stop what they’re doing for a minute. But then he laughs (for reasons that will become clear later), “In fact, it’s full of atrocious nitwits. “Liverpool is just another alien place to me now,” he says sadly. His conversational foil wonders if Liverpool, which has been home to Our Mike and drummer brother Ali since their soldier dad brought them back from Cyprus many years ago, still has people around every corner seeming to smile and say that they wouldn’t turn him away regardless of his name?Īt first, Our Mike pretends to be no better equipped to answer than the next fellow. “If you enjoy yogurt,” he muses, “it doesn’t mean you’re going to enjoy it all the time. Not that Our Mike always enjoys everything about his life on the road. While I’ve used all my standard tricks to try to make what follows entertaining – the thinly-veiled contempt for the subject, the torturous syntax, the relentless New Journalistic third-person self-references – I cannot, in good faith, urge even the most perfervid proponents of my prose to read further. If not to the death, though, I will defend your right to be a Flock Of Seagulls fan to the very slight injury.īut to be forewarned – while Our Mike isn’t remotely monstrous, or even particularly obnoxious, neither is he notably witty, charming, gorgeous, or outrageous, and if you’re anything but a rabid Flock Of Seagulls fan, reading what follows is unlikely either to amuse, enlighten, or even divert you. ![]() Mark my words – in 18 months, no one will admit to remembering anything about them. While they’re admittedly less excruciating than at least 175 current acts in heavy rotation, they’re also incontestably feeble – feeble singers, feeble players, feeble songwriters. (A note from the author: I can’t begin to picture anyone being all that excited about these four boys from Liverpool who show no signs whatever of altering the course of popular music in our time. It’s nice to be taken to all the hip spots, and to be making money.” I’d never have been here otherwise, except maybe on holiday, and then I’d have spent all my time lying on the beach or beside the pool thinking, ’cause that’s the sort of thing you do on holiday. “For instance, this is about the sixth time we’ve been to L.A. “Being on the road is one of the fruits of the labor. ![]() But when a conversational foil from America’s only rock ‘n’ roll magazine that bills itself as such asked him recently if he yearned for a time when he’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of all his band’s labors, he replied. For all I know it’s not even there anymore.”Įxcept for the time it took to record their second album late last year, the ‘Gulls have scarcely left America since ‘I Ran’ went into heavy rotation early last summer. “I moved in,” Our Mike ruefully confides, “spent about a week wandering around thinking how I’d like to decorate it, and then left on tour again. SINCE MOVING into it in the autumn of 1982, A Flock Of Seagulls lead singer Mike Score has scarcely seen his new flat in Liverpool 15, “where the riots were, halfway between the richest and poorest parts of the city.”īehold the travails of the touring musician. ![]()
